In 1912, Philippe Decént founded the shop originally named Decént
Cycles, known to be the first bicycle shop in the Montclair area.
Decént Cycles supplied area cyclists with high quality and custom-made
bicycles. In the early years, Philippe Desent, an avid cycling enthusiast
and master frame builder, was also associated with the Montclair Wheelmen
Cycling Club. The Wheelmen were a group of gentlemen cyclists, who would
hold local rides and races in the Montclair area.
According to Ms. Monaco, Philippe Desent Bicycles was sold to a Mr. Diamond
in 1927. The shop later changed hands in the early 1955 to Mr. Diamond's
son-in-law, Mr. Katz who continued the tradition until sometime in the
late 1960's, when sold to a Mr. Terzo. In 1989, Diamond Cycle changed
to its current owner, Craig Cornell.
